Does an absence of a wedding ring show a lack of commitment or simply declare, "I'm a golfer?"Several times in my marriage, especially on vacation, I have glanced at Hubbie's left hand to notice his wedding band missing. "What happened to your ring?" I asked. "Hon, golfers don't wear their bands when playing," he said. My pre-golfer self was confused and a little insulted. How much difference could a wedding band actually make in a swing?
Now, my engagement ring and wedding band are sitting quietly on the dresser of our condo's bedroom. Thank goodness they have each other to keep them company because they aren't feeling much love lately. Don't get me wrong, I adore my rings. However, trying to pull a golf glove on and off with my rings can become burdensome and distracting. It's just easier not to wear them.
One of my golfing gal pals keeps her rings in her purse when she plays and then puts them back on when she's done with her round. I've tried this, but I end up forgetting to put my rings back on and then panicking days later when I think I've lost them. So recently I find my hand bare more often than not.
It's not just my rings. I no longer wear a watch or the cool dangly earrings that many gals sport. I'm easy distracted, so it's just my TrionZ, my golf necklace from Pink Diva Golf, and some small earrings. Not because I don't love Hubbie, but because I play a lot of golf.
So it's time for another RWG poll. Do you wear any rings when you play golf?

I too, do not wear my rings golfing, or playing tennis either. I noticed when I did wear them I got a bit of a callus just under my finger. I know they make those "ring hole" gloves for women, but I haven't tried them. Once my teammate was playing a tennis match, fell on her hand, bent her 2 longest fingers back and ripped the cartilage, in the emergency room they had to cut her ring off. She was told by the doctor not to wear rings while playing sports. Now that fall injury should never happen playing golf, but you never know what else could happen.
Just make sure you are consistent with the place you put your rings, so you don't go crazy thinking you've lost them!
SJN is exactly right. I cannot tell you how many times I have put my wedding band in the "wrong" pocket of my golf bag. Or in the wrong place in my car. Then, I spend hours looking for it.
When I first got married 2 years ago I always took off my ring but I kept leaving in stupid places and nearly losing it.
For that reason, it is now safely welded to my finger for life - it's just not worth the agro from Mrs Ashworth. She'd kill me if I lost it!
Yes - it causes problems with my game, yes it gives me a little blister sometimes at the range...none of which compare to wrath of wifey when the ring goes missing. Lol.
I'm only kidding of course, but the ring stays on! It's different for the girls though as they've got 6lb diamonds sticking up so they've got to come off.
Charlotte wears her ring in the winter but when spring gets here and golf starts it spends much more time on her key chain.
Golf is an athletic sport and rings should be removed for safety reasons.
Yes, I always wear my ring. BUT I refuse to wear one of those golf gloves that have a hole for the ring/s on the left ring finger! Maybe because I only wear ONE ring, it doesn't bother me at all while golfing - only while making meatloaf(hee, hee).
The Platters sang your song in 1967.

Since my rings are not welded together, I take off my diamond but wear my band when I play. Doesn't interfere with the glove, and the calous is small and not a big deal. I have a small jewelry case in my golf bag for those occasions when I don't start out at home, but I prefer to leave it on the dresser.
Funny topic today, since my wife has definitely brought up the fact that I leave my ring at home when I play golf or go to the gym. I am very careful to always use the valuables pouch in my golf bag and have been without issue thus far. My One-Eyed father had his Rolex stolen out of his golf bag while at a golf course, so perhaps I should be more careful!
Definitely never wear a ring, it interferes with my grip and is just a distraction. I do wear the silver necklace my grandmother gave me - it never comes off. But I do like to wear a watch on my left wrist however. It makes me remember to control my swing with my left arm rather than letting my right take over.
I always wear both rings. I do have a small callous under the finger but it doesn't bother me. I also leave my glove on to avoid the problem of constant removal. When my husband put my wedding ring on my finger 8 years ago, it was a very emotional, symbolic act. I wouldn't remove it unless I knew he was putting it back on. (It helps that it is a simple platinum band.) Hubby always plays with his on too.
I feel your pain! I tried wearing a watch a few times but I cant don it. No clue how Phil Mickelson does it.
My wife and I both keep our rings in our lock box since we don't fit in them anymore 8=) We could get them resized, but our love for each other transcends rings.
I've never liked jewelry and haven't worn a watch for more than 30 years. I wore the ring for a couple years but I was never comfortable with it and she understands completely.
Breaking News: Local SC golfer @bradclardy rips nose off trying to remove wedding ring before round of golf.
When marriage commitments go horribly wrong!
Brilliant! It's always a problem for me too and have decided to completely leave my ring at home. It means though I often go days without it forgetting to put it back on. But I'd rather do this than lose it somewhere on a golf course.
I do wear my ring while golfing. But Norwegian custom is to wear the wedding ring on your right hand, so for ordinary right-handed golfers like me it's not a problem.
My fingers swell when I play, and my ring quickly becomes uncomfortable. So I don't wear it at all on golf days.
My wife's an OR nurse, and must remove all her jewelry every day.
I guess rings are important as symbols, but that's about it for us. We've been married for 31 years. Despite our advanced ages, we really never forget where home is.
Well done, Heather, you've joined the ranks of the committed golfer, where the game and peak performance urges you to take off the bling and concentrate on the game at hand. :-)
By the way - I have met several married women who bought a special chain and wear their rings as a necklace during the round. I've seen a few men who do this, too.
Just a funny story - my brother is a lefty and a tennis pro. For a while, he would wear the ring on his right hand while teaching or playing - but his women students would tease him about being gay, wearing it on the right hand. (they stopped when he started running them extra hard on the court) :-)

Hi Heather, I enjoy reading your blog, especially this particular entry. I've been married for almost 2 years and took up golf a little bit more than a year ago. I've always wondered if it's ok if I don't wear my wedding ring when I play golf. Now I know I am not alone. My husband always thinks that I should wear my ring because some of the pros i.e. Paula Creamer wears their jewelries in tournaments. I refuse to wear them simply because I don't want to ruin them. You know what sweat and dirt can cause...
I'll be linking your blog to mine, hope you don't mind, so I can read all your latest post. :)
